Our Story

In 1988, Geoff "Hutch" Hutchison purchased a small Surf Shop down the back of an alleyway in Victoria St Hamilton. Having just taken a redunancy from NZ Rail, Hutch decided to follow his passion of surfing & purchased the business named after Backdoor Pipe, a famous surf break on Hawaii's North Shore. After selling just one block of Wax on his 1st day he wondered whether he had done the right thing but that is all history now. 

Joined by his brother in law in 1997 when Hutch decided to open a 2nd store in Hamilton. The business has now grown to a total of 13 stores. Both are passionate about surfing & also enjoy snowboarding in the winter months & have kids that love their skating, surfing & snowboarding. So whether it is Auckland, the Waikato, Mt Maunganui, Rotorua, Napier or our Online store, you'll find everything you need.

Backdoor is now New Zealand's leading specialist Surf store.
